Five-Petal Crochet Flower Keychain

Free pattern · Step by stepJump to the crochet steps
Lime-green crochet flower keychain with five softly cupped oval petals around a small center and a silver ball chain threaded through the tip of one petal

I have a soft spot for flowers with edges that curl up like little spoons. This five-petal crochet flower keychain is about 3¼ in (8.3 cm) across, with five oval petals in lime-green cotton.

The first round gives each petal a narrow spine. In the second, seven double crochets fan out at the tip, like a little hand opening. A short ball chain through one petal turns the flower into a bag charm.

Cotton and a hook for the five-petal flower

  • Yarn: about 9 yd (8 m) of lime-green DK #3 cotton. I look for a smooth 5-ply cotton, around 125 m (137 yd) per 50 g, so I can see the loops on both sides of each petal.
  • Hook: 3.5 mm.
  • Small things: a removable stitch marker, a tapestry needle, scissors and a short metal ball chain with a clasp.

Tension. Aim for about 4 sc per inch (2.5 cm) in flat single crochet. The finished width is an estimate. The height of the double crochets at the tips can change how far the petals reach.

Stitches (US terms). MR = magic ring, ch = chain, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch, R = round. Mark the first sc in the ring. The two rounds travel around the center and each petal in turn. The counts in parentheses leave out chains and slip stitches.

The pattern — five petal foundations and their rounded edges

Flower (lime green, 3.5 mm hook, Make 1). The magic ring sits at the middle of the flower. The second round wraps the sides and tips of all five petals.

  • R1: MR, (sc in the ring, ch 5, skip the ch closest to the hook, sc in each of the next 4 ch, sl st into the center sc at the base of the petal) × 5. (25) Pull the ring closed.
  • R2: Sl st into the marked sc at the center, (sc, hdc and dc in successive positions up one side of the petal foundation, 7 dc in the tip stitch, dc, hdc and sc in successive positions down the other side, sl st into the next center sc) × 5. (65) The last sl st takes you back to the marker.

Where to put the seven double crochets

Hold one petal foundation with its tip pointing away from you. Start at the base and work one stitch in each of the first three positions: sc, then hdc, then dc. The fourth position is the tip. Work all seven dc into that one spot. Rotate the flower as the stitches fan out so you can see the free loops on the other side. Work back toward the middle with dc, hdc and sc, then slip stitch at the base before moving on to the next petal.

Tip. The little foundations like to twist around each other. After the slip stitch at the base, fan the next one out with your thumb so you can see which side you're working on.

Ch 1 and fasten off at the center, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail. Thread both ends through the backs of the center stitches with the tapestry needle, changing direction once before trimming.

Adding the keychain loop at the tip of a petal

Hold the flower face out with one petal pointing up. Find the middle dc of the seven at that petal's tip. Open the ball chain, feed one end through the gap just below the top loops of that dc, then snap the clasp shut. Lift the chain to check that the flower hangs from the middle of the petal.

Safety. Keep the metal chain and finished keychain away from children under 3. For a sewn decoration, stitch the flower directly to the fabric and leave the chain off.

I like the green on a canvas tote. A second flower in soft yellow makes a little pair you can split with a friend.

UK terms: US sc = UK dc, US hdc = UK htr and US dc = UK tr.
